Conversations on the space-time of community

SpRoUt Protokol Project – Student Centre Gallery, Zagreb.

September 2008

Drawn together, (re)grouped and in conversation, SpRoUt will transform the SC gallery, Zagreb into a literal platform for exploring the notion of collective and social hierarchies, relationships and power in light of socio-political forces and agendas evinced in the façades, monuments and institutions of the city. Applying a variety of pedagogical approaches – through workshops, discussion groups, performative lectures and a ‘collective publication’, the intention is to interrogate the interplay between private and public action; historical collectives, thresholds and alternative utopian landscapes; the roles of coincidence and simultaneity; semiotics, and the frustration of habituated, narrative forms.

A period of active research and making, SpRoUt will reflect on the hierarchies of groupings from the position of its own fluctuating anti-hierarchical grouping – a reflection that also takes place for the viewer as a means of collaboration. The gallery being the hub for this activity, SpRoUt will exhibit and montage shifting works – drawing, objects, video, film, and performance both in this space and, crossing the threshold, in the wider environs of the Student Centre and the City of Zagreb - looking towards the future from the perspective of past and present belonging and making.
