Beaujolais

Beaujolais is bucolic. Forget noncy Nouveau. Good Beaujolais is a frivolous, happy and extrovert drink. The wines we've selected emanate from the cellars of Bruno Gidrol. Bruno is the antithesis of the gallic metropolitan executive. He is neither scented nor manicured: he is, quite simply, 'grâce à Dieu', a man of the earth and therefore his wines explode with Gamay fruit. They also titillate the palate with all the frenetic flair of a trapeze artist; a stunning circus act of flashing purply bulbs and absolutely imbue a sense of reckless 'joie de vivre'. They are, in fact, an absolute delight to drink.

Beaujolais Hills 2005 (Bruno Gidrol)5.95
An explosive barrage of Gamay precedes a cavalry charge of fresh and fruity flavours pounding upon the palate with all the élan of Maréchal Ney's Cuirassiers. Voilà!
Beaujolais-Villages ‘Château du Souzy’ 2005 5.95
Vivid and intense fruit flavours pirouette upon the palate like a tipsy ballet dancer. Bronze medal, Concours Général Agricole, Paris 2006.
Saint-Amour 2004 (Bruno Gidrol) 5.95
‘Très Parisien!’A reference to its scents and racy qualities!
Côte de Brouilly 'Les Pierres Bleues' 2005 6.95
A wine bursting with sunny purply fruit! Gold Medal award Paris Wine Fair 2006
Chiroubles ‘Domaine Rocfêtre’ 2005 7.50
‘This is the most ethereal of all the crus, light and fragrant, as airborne as the height of its vineyards.’ (‘The Wines of Burgundy.’ Serena Sutcliffe.) Gold medal, Macon Concours des Vins, 2006.
Regnié ‘Domaine les petites pierres’ 2003 7.50
This 100% gamay, due to bottle age, has actually acquired wafts and flavours of Pinot Noir! Very interesting drop!
Moulin-à-Vent ‘Les Manganeses’ 2006 8.45
‘This is the grandest of the Beaujolais crus …much of the vineyard has a soil of crumbly, pink sand over granite, but the special ingredient is manganese- there is an old mine under Romanèche-Thorins…Moulin-à-Vent has real breed allied to structure and length.’
(‘The Wines of Burgundy.’ Serena Sutcliffe.)

Fleurie ‘La Madone’ 2004 9.95
Exquisite, almost Rodinesque structure with a dash of Renoir and a frisson of Monet. This is a serious drop. A floral bouquet of irises, roses and violets seduces the nose, and a smooth and elegant richness captivates the palate.
